It was time for the summer trip to Scotland on a Merrymaker trip. Today’s destination was Aberdeen, which could normally not be reached from Lancaster and return the same day.

37113 at Dundee with the 06:40 Barrow - Aberdeen 02/06/88 |
It was a typical summer day dull and overcast. The train headed north to Mossend Yard without incident. On arrival the Class 47 we were expecting was nowhere in sight and 37113 backed onto the train. This was going to be interesting Class 37 on 12 carriages. The train was booked to take an interesting route. North from Mossend Yard then through Falkirk Grahamston then to Dalmeny crossing the Forth and Tay bridges to Dundee. Not unexpectedly the loco had to be worked hard to attempt to keep to time.
On arrival at Dundee the 37 was removed and replaced by 47614.
By the time we arrived in Aberdeen summer had arrived and it was tipping it down We headed into town in search of food.
We only get a few hours in Aberdeen and returned to find our 47 replaced with another one 47231. This was turning into a multi engine railtour. We returned south by the same route and kept to time to Mossend where the 47 gave way to the West Coast electric loco.
Another extremely enjoyable day out.
