Another Merrymaker Mystery Excursion was running on Saturday 01 October 1988. We joined the train and shortly after taking a very circuitous trip round the West Midlands we discover or destinations are Bristol TM and Weston Super Mare.

We decide we are going to leave the train at Bristol. Well that is until the signalman puts us through the middle of the station rather than in a platform. We are unable to get off. We leave the station and stop at Bedminster and get off and a HST in the other direction is stopped by signals to allow us to get on and go back to Bristol.

During this period the Saturday trains between Portsmouth and Bristol were operated by Class 33/1s and 4TC push pull units. We go for a ride down to Westbury and head to Exeter for a 50 back to Bristol. 50001 arrives on the 15:00 Paignton to Cardiff so we join this and join the return excursion at Bristol.
