Excursion to Peterborough 06 May 1989

It was time for another Merrymaker trip this time to the Spalding Flower Festival. The train went on to Peterborough from Spalding. We left the train at Peterborough and wanted to cover the Kings Lynn line. On checking the timetable it was not possible to make the journey by train but was possible using the Rail Link bus and return via Ely by train. All is going well until we arrive just outside Peterborough on the return journey because the train is running a little late. We sit on the DMU and watch the carriages for our train leave the sidings and head for the station. The train we are on train arrives in Peterborough to allow us see the red tail light of our excursion train disappearing into the distance. What are we going to do now?

47436 makes an additional stop at Doncaster to

pick us up on 17:00 Peterborough - Carlisle 06/05/89

Time for a quick look at the timetable. Our special train is booked to travel via Spalding and Lincoln we could get on a train to Doncaster and see if we can get there before it. We board the next HST and head north.

We then head for the customer help desk and talk nicely to the staff, who are very helpful. They manage to get the special train stopped to allow us to rejoin. It is going to be over an hour before the train gets here because of the longer route it is taking. The train finally arrives and pulls into the platform.

We rejoin and make our way back to our seats. When we arrive back at our coach we receive a cheer from the rest of the coach who have been wondering where the inhabitants of the empty seats have gone.

We fortunately had an uneventful journey home.
